When we refer to pets, we are generally talking about wethers (Castrated males). In our experience, wethers make the very best pet goats. They are often naturally affectionate, friendly, and people-oriented, while avoiding many of the challenges associated with keeping breeding animals. Unlike bucks, wethers do not develop the strong odour that intact males are known for, making them a much more enjoyable choice for families and hobby keepers.
As wethers are not breeding animals, they are not registered and are not eligible to be shown through the DGSA. Their purpose is simply to be wonderful companions, whether that is as a beloved family pet or as a friend for other goats.
We do occasionally offer does as pets. These animals are not registered and may possess a trait or characteristic that we feel makes them unsuitable for breeding, despite being healthy, happy goats that can make fantastic companions.
Goats are highly social herd animals and should never be kept alone. Wethers make excellent companions for other goats and are often the perfect paddock mate for a buck. If you would like to keep a buck separately from your does, a wether provides him with the companionship he needs while helping to reduce stress and boredom. Likewise, wethers can be wonderful companions for does or for other pet goats.
