The Nigerian Dwarf is a miniature dairy goat originating from West Africa and further developed in the United States into the highly productive dairy breed known today. Despite their small stature, Nigerian Dwarfs possess the conformation and dairy characteristics of full-sized dairy goats, making them one of the most popular miniature dairy breeds worldwide.
Known for their friendly temperament, intelligence, and colourful appearance, Nigerian Dwarfs are well suited to family farms, small acreages, homesteads, and breeding programs. They are social, easy to handle, and highly adaptable to a range of environments.
One of the breed's most impressive features is its milk production. Nigerian Dwarfs can produce an average of 1.8 litres of milk per day, with exceptional does producing considerably more. Their milk is renowned for its high butterfat and protein content, typically ranging from 6–10% butterfat, making it ideal for drinking, cheese, yoghurt, soap making, and other dairy products.
The first Nigerian Dwarf genetics arrived in Australia in 2013 through the importation of frozen embryos and semen from the United States. The breed was formally recognised by the Dairy Goat Society of Australia in 2016 and has since experienced significant growth, with breeders across the country continuing to expand and improve the Australian population.
Today, Nigerian Dwarf goats are valued for their combination of dairy performance, gentle nature, longevity, and versatility, making them an excellent choice for both experienced goat breeders and newcomers alike.
The first full-blood Nigerian Dwarf doe born in Australia was First Fleet Chloe on 3 September 2014, following the initial embryo imports.
